The Battle of Midway had yet to be fully played out.

Captain Buckmaster of the USS Yorktown had ordered abandoned ship on the 4th June. When the Yorktown continued to float he asked for volunteers to reboard her. Among those who volunteered was Yorktown’s photographers mate Bill Roy.
