16th October 1942: A remarkable sequence of images illustrates the conditions of battle in Stalingrad

This series of images were taken by a German war correspondent, Kriegsberichter Kurt Heine, and document the attack on the Barrikady Gun Factory on October 16, 1942. Here, German troops of the II Kompanie, 577 Infanterie Regiment, 305 Infantry Division moving forward north of the Barricade Gun Factory soon after the attack began at 0800 hours.

German soldiers of 8./Inf.Rgt.577 heavy weapons secton take cover in a sunken road on the northern boundary of the Barrikady Gun Factory. The soldier second from left is holding a 5cm mortar and is wearing a woolen jumper under his service coat, something that was highly valued to give extra warmth on the colder nights.
