Another British retreat. In North Africa the Commander in Chief Middle East, Claude Auchinleck, had sacked the commander of the 8th Army, General Ritchie, and taken personal command himself. ‘The C-in-C stops on the road and watches his troops withdrawing from Mersa Matruh’. 2 July 1942.
