11th March 1945: A Japanese attack on the remote US Navy base causes a minor disturbance that barely interrupts the American war machine

Ulithi was as far away from the US Naval base at San Francisco as San Francisco was from London, England. Japanese assumptions that the US Navy would struggle to mount operations in the western Pacific had been badly wrong.
