The Cheshire Yeomanry patrolling on horseback in Syria, June 1941. At the outbreak of the Second World War, the British Army and its Empire troops only had a small number of mounted units. British cavalry horses last saw action in the Middle East between 1940 and 1942, where they were used for patrol and reconnaissance work.
