The Mark Vb Spitfire began joining operational Squadrons in February 1941. With a powerful Merlin engine, two cannon guns alongside four machine guns, and improved handling, this was a significant upgrade. Even though it was intended only as a stopgap measure, nearly 4,000 were produced, and it was the primary RAF fighter from 1941 to 1942.
