12th January 1941: Harry Hopkins, sent by the US President to report on the true situation in Britain, sends a hasty report back to the White House

Roosevelt with Hopkins in 1938. They worked closely together on the New Deal relief programme. Hopkins had most of his stomach removed in 1939 after a cancer diagnosis and thereafter struggled to absorb enough food to sustain him.
