The British retreat accelerates

20th May 1940: The British Expeditionary Force blows bridges as they retreat through Belgium into France

Although Churchill had told the British public that:

We may look with confidence to the stabilization of the Front in France, and to the general engagement of the masses…

There was much less confidence amongst the British military.
